Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library

Since its inception , Sir Dorabji Tata Library at TISS has developed its reputation of being the progressive library system with its several capacity building activities. Library team has over 8 academic positions at various levels with four of them having PhDs. In order to utilise the resources to the maximum extent academic programmes included in its “Strategic Plan for 2007-12” and later “Centre for Library and Information Management Studies”was established to offer the same.

Two curriculum development workshops involving national level experts and institutions were held in Aug 2008 and Oct 2008 which resulted in the development of PG Diploma and Masters in Library and Information Science.

Programmes are highly relevant in the present context of knowledge society as they are in sync with

  • Institute’s vision and mission: producing human service professionals in critical sectors like education.

  • National Knowledge Commission : developing quality library professionals to deal with digital information

  • National Mission on Education Through ICT : making content available in digital format to be accessed anywhere anytime , 20,000 colleges and 400 universities

National and International Collaboration

Centre has established several national and international collaborations for exchange of faculty, students and learning resources. Some of them are

  • London School Of Economics Library, UK

  • Mahasarakham University, Thailand

  • International Federation of Library Association (IFLA, The Hague, Netherlands)

  • Information and Library Network centre,(Inflibnet) Ahmadabad

  • Developing Library Network (DELNET), New Delhi

The centre is only five years old but is making committed efforts in developing advanced curriculum, innovative teaching and expert faculty. Some of the strengths of the centre are

  1. Highly Qualified Faculty: Currently the Centre has 8 academic staff , among them 4 hold Phds.

  2. Unique Curriculum: Because of the intense and elaborate cirriculum development processes, the masters and PG Diplomas are unique compared to other universities across india for their contemporary aproach.

  3. Emphasis on Practice: Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library is the most progressive library system which has implemeted all modern ICT applications for a learning environment. This provides floor for our students to learn librarianship in actual real life settings of a modern library.

  4. Institutional Support: PG Diploma, Masters and PhD programmes have received unstinted support from institute authorities since their launch in 2010.

  5. Training and Development: Centre has been involved in training library and infoamtion professionals in the region for long. This has helped centre in design, development of programmes to meet specific needs.

Faculty

The faculty will comprise academic staff from Centre for Library and Information Management Studies (CLIMS), Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library. Faculty from other schools/centres of TISS and external resource persons also will be involved in teaching for various programmes.

Dr. Anand Dodamani, currently Head of Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library at TISS, Mumbai, and Faculty Member at the Centre for Library and Information Management Studies, boasts an impressive 18-year academic career.  Prior to joining TISS, he has worked at various institutions, including IGIDR Mumbai; Pillai's College of Arts , Commerce and Science, New Panvel; Hashu Advani College of Special Education, Mumbai and Department of Collegiate Education, Karnataka.  He holds a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from Karnatak University, Dharwad and is known for his impactful research and publications.  His achievements include the 2012 Emerald South Asia LIS Research Fund Award and the ICSSR-NRCT Bilateral Programme Fellowship (2017). Recently, he was awarded a Research Fellowship at Metharath University in Thailand for 2024-2027.  Dr. Dodamani is a recognised Ph.D. guide and serves as a member of the Academic Council, the highest academic body at TISS. Dr. Dodamani is also a noted speaker on Academic Integrity, Prevention of Plagiarism, and Use of AI in Research. Dr.Satish Kanamadi is serving as Librarian, Sir Dorabji Tata Momorial Library, TISS. His research interests are Web resources, Information Access,Training and Development. Research contributions include over 30 articles in journals and edited volumes.He was awarded the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship by the CSC UK and was in London School of Economics, UK during Sept –Dec 2010. Dr. J. Shivarama, is serving as Assistant Professor (Selection Grade). Earlier he was with Karnatak State Open University, Mysore where he coordinated the Bachelor and Masters programme of Library and Information Sciences. Dr. Akhilesh K.S. Yadav is serving as Assistant Professor (Selection Grade). Prior to this, he worked with Guru Ghasidas Central University, Bilaspur, and “e-Granth” project in CCS Haryana Agriculture University. He has participated in several seminars and workshops. Mr. Puttaraj Choukimath is serving as Asst. Librarian (Senior Scale) and faculty. He holds B.Sc., B.Ed., M.L.I.Sc. from Karnatak University (Dharwad), and PGDLIM from TISS. Mr. Prabhu B.Gaddimani is serving as Deputy Librarian and faculty. He has MLISc and MPhil from Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, where he was awarded Gold Medals for both. Mr. Akhilesh Kumar Sankhwar is serving as Information Scientist and faculty. Before joining TISS , has worked with C-DAC Mumbai as Technical Officer from Nov. 2007 to July 2013. His areas of interest are Linux/Windows System Administration, IT Infrastructure Planning and Management, Providing IT Consultancy, IT Security, Xen and KVM Virtualization, Network Monitoring Solutions, RHEL Cluster, Administration of DNS and Mail, Website development, Cloud Computing, Web Resources and Information Access. Mr. Bhavesh Patel is serving as Asst. Librarian and faculty. He holds B.Sc.,(Computer Science) from University of Mumbai and M.L.I.Sc. from Shivaji University, Kolhapur and PGDLIM with Best Student Award from TISS.
